Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was conducted to identify the perceptions and experiences of smoking and smoking cessation in schizophrenic patients.
Methods: Data was collected from 19 patients with schizophrenia by a personal interview and was analyzed using the content analysis method.
Results: The analyzed domains were pros of smoking, cons of smoking, motivation of smoking cessation, pros of smoking cessation, and cons of smoking cessation. 191 statements were selected from data and those were categorized into 29 categories. Pros of smoking were categorized into ‘calming and controlling mood’, ‘relief from boredom’, ‘feeling of entertainment’, and ‘relief from symptoms’. Cons of smoking were categorized into ‘negative effects on physical health’, ‘negative effects on mental health’, and ‘economic burden’. Motivations of smoking cessation were categorized into ‘concerns for physical health problems’, ‘improving mental health’, and ‘decreasing economic burden’. Pros of smoking cessation were categorized into ‘improvement of physical health’, ‘improvement of mental health’, ‘economic advantage’, and ‘cleanliness’. Cons of smoking cessation were categorized into ‘emotional problems’, ‘boredom’, ‘withdrawal symptoms’, and ‘difficulties in social interactions’.
Conclusion: Smoking cessation programs for patients with schizophrenia should be included in the interventions for relieving depression, anxiety, boredom and negative symptoms.
